SHORT FILM PROGRAM #15.7 Dimmak Studios |
Sunday, June 23, 2013 5:00pm – 6:30pm Filmmaker Happy Hour 6:30pm – 8:00pm Short Film Program & Q&A |
Join us for another fantastic program of short films & animation, and our monthly Filmmaker Happy Hour.
Short Film Program #7 includes a special screening of the first episodes of THE NEW KIND, the new anime-flavored sci fi series from Peter Hyoguchi. We will get an exclusive work-in-progress look at Peter’s extraordinary production, which includes a very successful kickstarter campaign, a remarkable animation crew (over 200 people so far!), and an innovative, multi-state work flow.
The line up also features Kate Rees Davies’ new short film STICKS AND STONES, shot on the F65 in 4K. Kate collaborated with DP Steve Romano as she made the move from film to digital shooting. The short film is the story of Sam, an artistic 12 year old played by Cole Ewing, who is being bullied at school.
The program includes an encore screening of one of the films from the 2013 LA Film Festival. HOLLYWOOD SHORTS is proud to return as the Presenting Organization of Short Film Program 1 at LAFF this year – and we will screen one of our favorite films from this group, BUSTED ON BRIGHAM LANE by Talibah L. Newman. Talibah wrote and directed the film, which won a 2012 Director’s Guild of America Student Film Award.

ImprovOlympics is launching a new 7 – week No – Budget Filmmaking course, being taught by writer/director JOE LIPARI. Joe is offering a 20% discount exclusively to HOLLYWOOD SHORTS members ($100.00 discount).
When asked for advice on how to get in to filmmaking James Cameron said “Pick up a camera. Shoot something.”; that’s exactly what you do in this workshop. Over the course of 8 weeks students will collaboratively write, produce, shoot and edit a short film while learning the tools to do it again on their own. Students will learn how to take their ideas and write a script that can be shot on limited time and money while producing a 5 – 10 minute short film in 1080p, full HD. This workshop is perfect for aspiring actors, writers, directors, make-up artists, directors of photography or anyone interested in adding to/improving upon their skills while creating something for their reel/resume.
Tuesdays: 7-10:30 PM (Begins 1/10) – Teacher Joe Lipari (WR)
For HOLLYWOOD SHORTS Discount – Call 323-962-7560 or Email iO
I came up with the idea for this workshop because film school was quite possibly the most daunting experience of my life; which says a lot considering I was in the U.S. Army. Most of my instructors taught a “you can’t make a movie without money” approach, as if all the high dollar equipment found on Hollywood sets were an absolute necessity. But, the only necessity in becoming a good filmmaker is creativity.
In this seven week class we’ll discuss ways to take your idea and break it down to find the cheapest / fastest / easiest way to take it from your brain to the screen; while delivering a top notch final product. We’ll take one of the ideas from class and implement said strategies, collaboratively shooting a short film together. At the end of the 7 weeks students will have something good to add to their reels and the knowledge/confidence to do it again on their own. It’s time to stop waiting to be “discovered” and create your own opportunities…. Make this year the year you take your career to the next level.

We are excited to kick off the festival journey of our newest short film CERTIFIED written & directed by our own LUKE ASA GUIDICI! Our friends Theo and Daniel down the street at the annual HollyShorts Film Festivalwill host our US.S. PREMIERE!
CERTIFIED stars Rebecca Spicher, Thomas Garner, Therese Lentz and Timothy Brennen and is set in 1958 West Virginia. The film was adapted by Luke from the beloved short story OPEN WINDOW penned by British literary giant SAKI in the late 1800’s. Luke’s interpretation updates the characters and creepy setting into a gleefully eerie “Twilight Zone” style retelling.
Join us as we celebrate the kick off of an exciting festival run with stops coming soon at Dragon-Con in Atlanta, the Big Bear Film Festival, and Bend Film Festival in Oregon.

Sean Gannet was born to drive slow, dance fast, and make movies. He joins us on Sunday literally moments after wrapping production on a new feature film. He also just completed production on the short film “The Poets” written by Lori Fischer, starring Susan Louise O’Connor & Jeff Hiller. This year he also Line Produced the epic TED Prize MissionBlue Conference in the Galapagos Islands. Sean clearly loves the short format – he also has a pretty rockin’ musical THE ONE THAT I WANT – also produces as part of RIPFEST Collaborative Film Project.
Keegan was born in Madison, Wisconsin but quickly moved to Boston where he spent most of his young life. He was introduced to film in high school via the local access TV station where he created his first critical success: a regional champion video in the National History Day competition. Yes, he is a nerd. He received his BFA from Middlebury College in Vermont in 2001. There he enjoyed a liberal arts education, was awarded the David I. Goldman Prize for Excellence in Film and developed a love for Hitchcock and surrealism in film.
So much to say about George, and yet words seem so deficient. This short film was a collaboration between Billy Bob Thornton and George, born from a character study Billy Bob developed as part of his 1986 one-man play “Swine Before Pearls”. George and Billy Bob first worked together on George’s feature “Ghost Brigade”, then George came on to direct Billy Bob’s short script. The film was shot in three days in a Simi Valley hospital that was the location of “Terminator 2”. Billy Bob went on to win the Academy Award for Best Screenplay for the feature version of Karl’s story, which he also directed and starred in. Watching the short film navigate the process from short fest programs to Academy Award Winning Feature was a gamechanger for me personally. The power of this film changed the way I thought of shorts, and their place in my own life and filmmaking career. I started HOLLYWOOD SHORTS the next year.
George’s film career, cut so brutally mid-sentence, includes an incredible body of feature films, short films and documentaries. George was enjoying one of the those magical years we all dream off – his “Casino Jack” starring Kevin Spacey World Premiere at Toronto, with a distro deal secured, great reviews for Spacey growing from screening to screening. More great news about the film buzzing about as the film lands screenings at Doha, and Austin, locking an LA premiere at AFI and then… Denver.
I can think of no better way to say good bye to a storyteller I truly respected, and always considered a Really Nice Guy, than to remember the first time I saw his name on the screen and the 25 minutes that ensured I would never forget it.
See ya later, George. Thank you.

Several key elements must occur for me to get into the holiday spirit – the arrival of the seasonal Pumpkin Latte at Starbucks, and the annual Halloween short film from the guys at ArieScope, led by horror film director ADAM GREEN. Coming off Adam’s new feature HATCHET 2, and all the media guff a few weeks ago when the much anticipated film was unbelievably yanked by theatres during opening weekend, they still made the time to put together another amazing Halloween short film. JUST TAKE ONE is their 12th annual Halloween short, starring Adam and Joe Lynch. The hysterical film features a nice cameo appearance from the JACK CHOP guy!

CAST: John Colella, Reamy Hall, Marcia Wallace, Kirsten Vangsness, Chris Mulkey, Elizabeth Beckwith, Andrew Cansler, Jim Roof, Cris D’Annunzio
Comedian/filmmaker Joe Wilson created and directs VAMPIRE MOB, a web series about a hitman who is a vampire. His mother-in-law is now moving in… for all eternity. Outstanding cast and laugh out loud funny. Season 1 includes 6 episodes, and they are currently beginning production on Season 2.

Three time Emmy winning filmmaker Richard Gale wrote, directed and produced the little film with the big name. HSMWTIW was clearly “The” Horror Short Film of 2009, grabbing 12 fest awards during its epic festival run. This film was everywhere, and has over 9 million views on YouTube alone. Oh… and it is really funny.
