Venue renovation! Dim Mak Studios is now THE ATTIC

RENOVATION ALMOST COMPLETE!!

Hollywood Shorts - December 2013 screeningWe will soon be announcing our revised spring screening schedule as our home for many years, Cinespace… a.k.a. Dim Mak Studios, goes through a new transformation with a new name:

THE ATTIC

The new dates for our 2014 African American ShortsFest and our annual Women Directors fest will be confirmed shortly, as well as our regular monthly screenings.

Our venue sponsor The Blvd Group is completing a series of renovations on both the screening room and the lounge that will happen throughout the year.  First up is the screening room!  I got a peek at the space and it looks amazing!

Today they are installing the sound and AV system, and if all goes according to plan, we will be able to get back to our regular schedule just a few more weeks.

Thanks for your patience, as we await our renewed and refreshed screening room.

We will be referring to the venue for now as THE ATTIC, but it is the same address and location that maintains the spirit, and history of Cinespace – and the indie film community it has supported over the years.

SEASON 15 CLOSING NIGHT

Join us on Saturday to celebrate the wrap of our 15th season of monthly short film screenings!!  It has been an extraordinary year of filmmaking, new creative friendships and collaborations, and so many new shorts and animated films.

This month, we welcome back alumni filmmaker Kate Rees Davies and a special music video collaboration she shot with Australian singer/songwriter VASSY for the song BEAUTIFUL. The video features some amazing young people from PLAYGROUND OF DREAMS, an innovative mentoring program teaming entertainment industry leaders with children to foster their creativity, leadership, and unique purpose in the world.  The project brings together a lovely visual style with the powerful lyrics in Vassy’s empowerment anthem. Vassy and Kate will both be in attendance!

This month’s program also includes another eye-popping selection of short films and animation from near and far, including the encore screening of Talibah L. SUMMER SATURDAY!!

We continue our summer gatherings with a special SATURDAY Filmmaker Happy Hour and Screening!!!

This weekend’s Filmmaker Happy Hour welcomes the cast and crew of our second SUMMER SHOOT of 2013.  We are exploring the process of developing and creating a web series, and we began principal photography this week in a great location in Pasadena.  Meet some of the amazing crew and sponsors who have been so critical in making this Summer Shoot so successful.

This month, we welcome home one of our favorite alumni – award winning filmmaker & screenwriter PAULA GOLDBERG.  She will be giving us a sneak peek of her brand new short film WATERSHED and sharing some of her process and insights on our filmmaker panel.  Paula screened her short film Traveling Companion at the inaugural Hollywood Shorts in October of 1998, so it is very special to have her back to share her latest adventures making films in Dallas!

This month’s program also features an outstanding collection of international animation and short films.

Meet The Filmmakers – January 2011

HOLLYWOOD SHORTS - Monthly screenings

meet the filmmakers

edition 13.3

learn more about the filmmakers you outta know

On Sunday, we hosted the cast and crew celebration of CERTIFIED by writer/director LUKE ASA GUIDICI, and the Los Angeles premiere of FINDING JACOB by writer/director BRETT STUMPP.  Both filmmakers shared great insight on their inspiration, their process, and some of the valuable lessons they have learned along the way.   If you missed the screening, here is a little more info about these exciting filmmakers.

Brett Stumpp

FINDING JACOB
www.findingjacob.com

Brett Stumpp

A graduate of Vancouver Film School and New England College, Brett spent many years working in different facets of the film industry in order to know first hand what each person’s responsibilities were. This enabled him a well-earned insight into the process of filmmaking.  Brett’s current short film FINDING JACOB is a deeply moving film inspired by his own personal medical crisis, which led him to explore issues of fatherhood and missed opportunities.

Having traveled extensively in his youth, Brett delights in exploring different cultures and customs, which help inform his creative process.  Through the course of his studies in everything from martial arts to shamanism, his voracious appetite for the human experience has helped form an outlook unique to the world. This is the foundation Brett has build his career on.  In the last few years, Brett has been able to hone his writing and directing abilities as a member of the highly esteemed Beverly Hills Playhouse, and has directed the 2010 feature film Walk By Faith 2: After The Honeymoon.
FINDING JACOB continues to garner warm reception on the festival circuit due to it’s original storytelling and exceptional visual style and composition.  The short is enjoying nation-wide television broadcast as part of the African American Short Films television show.

Luke Asa Guidici

CERTIFIED
www.lukeasa.com

Luke Asa Guidici - FilmmakerWhen Luke was 6 years old, he broke the family television.  They never got another one.

Instead he played with Transformers, explored the woods, read encyclopeias, built things with LEGO’s and listened to NPR.  He learned what was funny from Calvin & Hobbes.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude BA/Cinema from SFSU in 2003, he trekked to Los Angeles.  He has worked as an extra, a grip, PA, camera operator, AD, producer, editor, falconer and director.

If Luke wasn’t making films, he would be doing something involving snowboarding, cooking or politics.

Luke is currently looking for one or two feature scripts, in the Sci-Fi/Comic-book/Horror genre. He loves to direct music videos, and is always open to working with new local bands.  He is repped at Bucks Boys for music video & commercials.
